BBC Alba - Gaelic Comedy Sketch Writing Initiative

Category: TV; Radio

BBC Alba/MG Alba | Gaelic Comedy Sketch Writing Initiative | Deadline: 4th October 2017

MG Alba and BBC Writersroom have joined forces to launch a talent search to find the best comedy writers for a brand-new Gaelic sketch show.

We are looking for short, snappy and shareable sketches that are punchy, unruly and irreverent and aimed at an 18-34 audience.

We are keen to reach all new comedy talent and although primarily aimed at Gaelic speakers, this opportunity is open to non-Gaelic speakers too (more detail is available in the Terms & Conditions).

There is no guarantee of selection but writers will be paid for any idea or sketch that is shortlisted as suitable for filming. The strongest writers will then be invited to join the creative team.

So, if you’re a writer looking to be a part of the next generation of Gaelic comedy then this may be the initiative for you.

What to Submit:

We don’t want to limit your creativity so we’re open to all styles and tones - from biting satire, to surreal weirdness to sight-gags and slapstick. But, we have some practical considerations to think on –

  • We want strong, clear characters who are returnable.
  • Sketches need to be suitable for a pre-watershed audience/time slot.
  • We have a cast of 6 male/female actors who will play multiple roles.
  • Locations will be a mix of studio and locations across rural and urban sites.

You will need to send us the following:

  • 2 sketches that are each a maximum of 90 seconds long (1.5 pages roughly).
  • 2 one-line ideas.
  • Brief paragraph on career to date.

We are open to submissions from individuals and writing teams – including partnerships between Gaelic and non-Gaelic writers.

Stage directions could be in English with a speech-by-speech translation of all Gaelic dialogue into English.

A template is attached at the bottom of this page to give you a guide on lay-out for your submission.

All sketches, ideas and a brief paragraph on your career to date must be submitted as a single PDF format.

Please do not put your name and contact on the document you upload as all entries are read anonymously.

The work you submit must not have been previously commissioned, optioned or produced on any platform including TV, online or radio.

Judges on the panel will include:

  • Michael Hines (multiple award-winning comedy Producer/Director and the creative force behind Still Game, Torcuil’s Guide to being a Gael, Dà Là san Dàmhair etc)
  • Bill Macleod (Commissioning Executive and in his misspent youth Producer/Director of Ran Dan)
  • Angela Galvin (Development Producer, BBC Writersroom Scotland)
  • Seonag Monk & Calum Mackinnon (Comedy writers – Ran Dan, Gaol @Gael etc)

Opening Date for Submissions: 13th September 2017

Closing Date for Submissions: 4th October 2017 (3-week window)

Finalists Notified: 30th October – 3rd November 2017

Send your submission via the BBC Writersroom e-submissions system

Before submitting your sketch please read the full terms and conditions

Sgeama Sgrìobhadh Comadaidh Gàidhlig

Ceann-ama: Diciadain 4mh an Dàmhair 2017

Tha MG ALBA agus BBC Writersroom a’ tighinn ri chèile airson tàlant ùr a lorg dha prògram comadaidh Gàidhlig.

Ma tha sibh a’ smaoineachadh gun toir sibh gàire air aodann saoghal na Gàidhlig, tha sinn airson cluinntinn bhuaibh. Tha an seòrsa prògram seo air a chruthachadh dha daoine eadar 18-34, le sgeidsichean goirid, èibhinn, deiseil airson nam meadhanan sòisealta.

Tha sinn airson an doras fhosgladh dha daoine tàlantach ann an comadaidh, gu h-àraidh daoine le Gàidhlig. Na gabh dragh ge-tà, faodaidh sibh fhathast pàirt a ghabhail mur a bheil Gàidhlig agaibh! (Coimheadaibh air na teirmichean is na cumhaichean airson barrachd fiosrachaidh).

Chan eil cinnt ann am bi ur stuth air a thaghadh, ach ma bhios, gheibh sibh ur pàigheadh. Bidh na sgrìobhadairean as làidire a’ faighinn cuireadh obrachadh còmhla ris an sgioba cruthachail.

Ma tha sibh airson a bhith nur pàirt den ath ghinealach de chomadaidh Gàidhlig, seo dhuibh an cothrom!

Dè a dh’fheumas sibh a chuir a-steach?

Feumaidh sibh feuchainn ri gàire a thoirt air a h-uile duine - tha sinn fosgailte ri rud sam bith a th’ agaibh, bho fòcaideas gu neònachas, cho fad ’s gu bheil e èibhinn! Tha cuid de rudan ann air am feum sinn smaoineachadh -

  • Caractaran a dh’fhaodas a bhith ann an iomadh phrògram
  • Na sgeidsichean a bhith freagarrach a bhith air an craoladh ron sgarachdainn craolaidh.
  • Tha sia cleasaichean againn a chluicheas iomadh phàirt: triùir bhoireannach agus triùir fhireannach
  • Bidh am prògram air fhilmeadh eadar Glaschu agus na h-eileanan, ann an stiùidio agus a-muigh

Cuir na leanas thugainn:

  • Dà sgeidse a tha 90 diog aig a’ char as fhaide (1.5 duilleag)
  • Dà smuain aon-loidhne
  • Paragraf beag air ur n-obair gu ruige seo

Tha sinn fosgailte ri pìosan bho sgiobaidhean agus bho dhaoine fa-leth, agus com-pàirteachas eadar sgrìobhadairean Gàidhlig agus sgrìobhadairean aig nach eil Gàidhlig.

Air sgàth ’s nach bruidhinn ar britheamhan gu lèir Gàidhlig, bhiodh e nas sìmplidh nam biodh an stiùireadh àrd-ùrlar ann am Beurla, le eadar-theangachadh den chòmhradh Gàidhlig ann am Beurla cuideachd.

Tha teamplaid an seo airson ur cuideachadh.

Feumaidh ur sgeidsichean a bhith ann an aon PDF.

Dèanamh cinnteach nach eil ur n-ainm agus ur seòladh air gach pìos. Le seo, faodaidh sinn a bhith cothromach nuair a leughas sinn ur stuth.

Chan fhaod obair sam bith a chuireas sibh a-steach a bhith air a chleachdadh, no air a chuir a-steach airson a chleachdadh air ùrlar poblach sam bith, eadar telebhisean, rèidio no air-loidhne.

Am measg nam britheamhan bidh:

  • Mìcheal Hines (Àrd-Riochdaire/ Stiùiriche agus pàirt de sgioba Still Game, Torcuil’s Guide to being a Gael, Dà Là san Dàmhair is eile)
  • Uilleam MacLeòid (Ard-Choimiseanair, Riochdaire air Ran Dan)
  • Angela Galvin (Riochdaire-Leasachaidh, BBC Writersroom Scotland)
  • Seonag Monk & Calum Mac Fhionghain (Sgrìobhadairean air Ran Dan, Gaol @Gael is eile)

Ceann-latha fosglaidh: 13mh an t-Sultain 2017

Ceann-latha dùnaidh: 4mh an Dàmhair 2017 (trì seachdainean)

Fios gu Crìochaichean: 30mh an Dàmhair gu 3mh an t-Samhain 2017

Cuiribh ur sgeidse a-steach an seo, mas e ur toil e

Mus cuir sibh ur sgeidse a-steach, leugh na teirmichean is na cumhaichean
