Spanish

An introduction to Spanish, presented by Eoghan Macdonald.

In this programme, we hear about the world famous Spanish football teams, Barcelona and Real Madrid and are given a taste of the country's other official languages - Basque, Catalan and Galician.

Chatterbox is designed as a starting point to let young children hear what various non-English languages sound like, and to encourage them to speak them. The series demonstrates the languages in an entertaining way, and familiarises children with useful words and simple phrases. Across six programmes, there is the opportunity to hear Spanish, Mandarin, French, German, Gaelic and Italian. Festivals, competitions, celebrations and family life are featured.

Italian

An introduction to Italian presented by Eoghan Macdonald.

In this programme, Eoghan meets with Italians born in Scotland. He hears how they continue to celebrate their unique culture and heritage, in particular through their great love of food and cooking.

Mandarin

Eoghan meets members of the Chinese community in Scotland, and learns about the celebration of Chinese New Year. Listeners are familiarised with simple phrases in Mandarin.

French

Eoghan meets French children to find out about their national holiday, Bastille Day, and other French celebrations. Listeners are familiarised with simple French phrases.

German

An introduction to German. Presenter Eoghan Macdonald meets up with school pupils taking part in a worldwide German ‘adventure’ project. Young listeners are familiarised with simple and useful German words and phrases.

Gaelic

An introduction to Scottish Gaelic, presented by Eoghan Macdonald. The programme visits The Royal National Mod, an annual Scottish festival for music, poetry and song. Chatter demonstrates non-English languages in an entertaining way, and familiarises the young listener with useful words and simple phrases.
