Religious Studies KS3 & KS4/GCSE: How can I know the Sun will rise tomorrow?

Can we know anything for certain? Will the sun always rise in the morning? In this sketch Thomas and Johnny have very different views as they explore David Hume's theory of scepticism.

Written and performed by the Burnistoun team of Robert Florence and Iain Connell.

Teacher Notes

This short film could be used to introduce the philosophical question: 'can we know anything for certain?'

Before playing the clip, ask students what their thoughts are on this question.

They could answer this question anonymously on pieces of card, and a nominated person could display the class results, possibly in a graphical form.

This could lead on to further investigation and debate on Hume’s theory of scepticism and response to miracles.

Curriculum Notes

This short film will be useful for teaching secondary PSHE and religious studies.
