PSHE KS2 / KS3: Moods and hormones

The girls are enjoying a girls only party. Monica, aged 11, and Lara, aged 12, are having great fun, but Akira, also 12, just doesn't seem her usual happy self.

Not wanting to miss out on all of the fun, Tony and Gabriel decide to crash the party.

As the boys join the party it becomes clear that there is something up with Akira, she's being grumpy and makes fun of Gabriel for going red whenever he is embarrassed or nervous.

When playing a game of 'Secret, secret' Gabriel confesses that he feels like people always laugh at him when he blushes, as Akira has just done.

Feeling terrible Akira bursts into tears and runs to the bathroom.

Lara and Monica recognise that Akira's emotions are all over the place, and explain that perhaps it's because she is getting her period.

They explain that her moodiness is just down to PMS (premenstrual syndrome), and not because she's a bad person.

This clip is from the series Ask Lara.

Teacher Notes

The film could be used a stimulus to discuss PMS specifically or maintaining positive friendship during adolescence.

At 3 minutes 50 second, the A, B, C quiz could be paused and each option discussed in groups or pairs.

This is repeated again throughout the clip. At 5 minutes 10 seconds, a pause could be made to explore what might be meant by girls' problems.

Curriculum Notes

This clip is suitable for teaching Modern Studies/PSHE/PDE at KS2 and KS3 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 2nd and 3rd Level in Scotland.
