Design and Technology KS2: Creating a Christmas den

Presenters Lauren Layfield and Joe Tracini and The Dengineers team help Astrid from Brighton create her dream of a Christmas den.

They investigate the steepness of the slope of the roof and how important this is in climates were there is a great deal on snowfall.

They compare a pitched roof with a flat roof and demonstrate how the weight of the snow on a flat roof will cause it to collapse, while on a pitched roof the snow and rain will fall gently off the sides.

Teacher Notes

This could be used to introduce the process of design, and as a prompt for class discussion and learning in areas such as initial research, designing and making a structure.

They could investigate how important is the pitch of the roof, testing how much weight and pressure roofs with varying pitch can handle.

Curriculum Notes

This clip will be relevant for teaching Design and Technology at KS2 in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland and 1st and 2nd level in Scotland.
