Rugby legend Jonny Wilkinson on life in France

Jonny Wilkinson explains how his time playing for the French club Toulon rejuvenated his game and relaxed him as a person

We join Jonny Wilkinson at the training ground of French club Toulon, where we also meet the general manager who explains the complexities of having players from seven nationalities. Players also talk about how important understanding the vocabulary of rugby in French is to improving their game and making friends within the team. This was filmed in 2012 when Jonny Wilkinson played for Toulon. He retired from professional rugby in 2014. Key words and phrases in French are demonstrated and shown on screen.

Teacher Notes

Students studying PE could be invited to practise the basic French that is presented in the interview. They might then visit a younger class in the school and tell them about the techniques and preparation involved in training and preparation to compete in elite sport. An addition to the visit would be an introduction to speaking French, where pupils could stress the social benefits within sport, of making the effort to speak another competitor’s language.

Curriculum Notes

These clips could be used for teaching PE and Modern Foreign Languages at KS3 and KS4 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and and National 4/5 or Higher in Scotland.
