Multi track recording
Radio 1's Dev meets music producer Charlie Hugall to discuss multi track recording. Charlie breaks down one of his most successful recordings, 'You Got the Love’ by Florence and the Machine, to show how the track fits together in the studio.
By starting with the beat, Charlie reveals how each instrument plays its part and demonstrates how everything, from the bass drum to the guitar riff, contributes to giving the track its identity. He shows Dev how carefully listening to these different elements is the key to building the perfect sound.
This clip could be used to introduce the idea of multi track projects and recordings. It could also be used to demonstrate the importance of each layer within a piece of music and how they complement each other. The clip also demonstrates the process of mixing and highlights the importance of critical listening.
This clip will be relevant for teaching Music and appears in OCR, Edexcel, AQA, WJEC, KS3, KS4 and GCSE in England and Wales, CCEA GCSE in Northern Ireland, and 3rd and 4th level, as well as SQA National 4, 5 and Higher in Scotland.
