French KS2: Favourite hobbies
We meet Ben after school as he waits for his mum to take him swimming. While he is waiting, Ben links up online with friends in Marseille to find out about hobbies in France. Lili and Ingrid are about to go to their school gym to play volleyball. The girls introduce Ben ‘virtually’ to other pupils at their school to help him find out about popular hobbies. They take their tablet around their school interviewing several fellow pupils. They ask the question Tu aimes faire quoi? and find out about a wide variety of hobbies including guitar, piano, listening to music, reading, cycling, skateboarding, scuba diving, horse riding, drama, drawing and playing the drums.
This clip could be use to support understanding of grammar by comparing I like volleyball with J’aime le volleyball. Draw pupils attention to the correct definite article i.e. le/la. For example la musique but le théâtre.
It could also be used to practise expressing likes and dislikes. Ask pupils to respond to the question Tu aimes eg le théâtre? by (a) holding thumbs up or down (b)answering oui/non (c) answering in a sentence eg Oui, j’aime/j’adore le théâtre.
A good listening activity is to call out one of the hobbies for pupils to mime.
