English KS1 / KS2: Sam Silver: Undercover Pirate by Jan Burchett and Sara Vogler

Actress Anjli Mohindra reads extracts from 'Sam Silver: Undercover Pirate' by Jan Burchett and Sara Vogler, explaining why she loves the book, how it captured her imagination and why she loves to read.

Anjli introduces the story of Sam, a boy who finds a gold doubloon that whisks him back in time aboard a pirate ship.

We watch as Anjli explores the ship, comes under fire from enemy cannon and even spots some sharks!

Teacher Notes

Students could explore the lives of famous pirates from history and well known literature, and write a biography for whichever pirate draws their interest.

Ask students to describe a day in the life of a pirate and write entries for the ship's log.

The clip also provides an opportunity to look at how action is expressed in fictional writing, and students could write their own action scenes for this story or another of their own creation.

Curriculum Notes

These clips are suitable for teaching English and Literacy at Key Stage 1, 1st Level, Key Stage 2 and 2nd Level.
