Art and Design KS3 / GCSE: The craft of woodturning

Paul Martin travels to the Peak District for a one-to-one tutorial with Robin Wood, a self-taught wood-turner who has reinvigorated the ancient craft of bowl-making.

Robin shows how to turn a length of sycamore into a simple bowl using a traditional pole lathe.

This clip is from the series Paul Martin's Handmade Revolution.

Teacher Notes

Whilst the use of a traditional pole lathe gives a fascinating insight into the early craft of wood turning, it also gives inspiration to pupils using a modern lathe available in most woodwork departments.

Curriculum Notes

This clip will be relevant for teaching art and design at KS3 and GCSE in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and National 4 and 5 in Scotland.
