Art and Design KS3 / GCSE: The craft of pottery

Paul Martin travels to artists’ colony, St Ives in Cornwall, for a lesson in pottery from Louise Thompson.

She shows him how to throw a pot and explains her love of clay.

She demonstrates glazing and simple decoration on a biscuit fired pot, before firing the finished bowl.

This clip is from the series Paul Martin's Handmade Revolution.

Teacher Notes

Could be used as a starting point for a three-dimensional ceramic project.

Students could research the craft potter Louise Thompson and the processes she applies to her work.

They could then explore some of these in their own pottery, for example using a potter’s wheel, hand building techniques and experimenting with glazes.

Curriculum Notes

This clip will be relevant for teaching art and design at KS3 and GCSE in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and National 4 and 5 in Scotland.
