Music teaching techniques with Jimmy Rotheram
Jimmy Rotheram explains his whole school approach to teaching primary school music.
In this film Jimmy Rotheram explains his simple three step approach to teaching music.
Influenced by Kodaly and Dalcroze teaching practices, Jimmy explains how a long term and deeply embedded approach split into three distinct stages, slowly teaches the children the key musical concepts.
Starting with the preparation stage where children learn concepts unconsciously through singing and playing musical games, we see progression as the children learn musical sounds before finally being taught the 'factual knowledge' of notation and musical symbols.
We see how the children are engaged by singing and movement. They learn the way a pulse feels in the body and the sound of different notes before they are exposed to a symbol, musical notation or complex charts.
