Teaching the teachers – introducing music into your classroom simply and confidently
Music Teacher Lindsay Ibbotson visits a school in Teeside to meet Lydia, a non-specialist music teacher, to support her to deliver music lessons confidently and simply to her Reception class.
Over a series of visits, Lindsay demonstrates how carefully planned teacher training can help deliver results. Benefits can be seen in both the growing confidence of the teacher and the engagement of the children.
Lindsay has been working to develop a teacher CPD programme that uses a Kodaly inspired approach to training, and where teachers are supported in the classroom by a mentor, allowing them to learn along with their class until they have built the confidence to deliver the sessions themselves.
See some of the techniques, guides and games Lydia and Lindsay use to teach basic music concepts such as a ‘beat’ to children.
This approach needs little in the way of instruments or expensive resources, but does require a concerted effort and the correct support, and for music learning to become embedded in the classroom. Benefits can be seen in both the growing confidence of the teacher and the engagement of the children.
This film depicts activities suitable for teaching music at EYFS and Key Stage 1 in England, Foundation in Wales, Early Years and Foundation KS1 in Northern Ireland and Early and First Level in Scotland.
