Championship One: Crusaders march on against Gateshead

North Wales Crusaders 52-8 Gateshead Thunder (Sun)

North Wales Crusaders still sit at the top of Kingstone Press Championship One as they concluded a tough week with a 52-8 success over Gateshead Thunder.

The hosts grabbed two tries in as many minutes just before the break and, aided by a one-man advantage for 10 minutes after Stephen Welton was sent to the sin-bin, ran away with the contest in the second period.

Winger Rob Massam opened the scoring for Crusaders before Ben Hardcastle, with a fantastic dummy, replied for the visitors.

But Owain Brown crashed over to put Crusaders back in the ascendancy, then Lee Hudson and Craig White struck to put them 22-8 ahead at the break.

Lewys Weaver, Leon Brennan, Ryan MacDonald, Tommy Johnson, then White and Massam again all crossed for Crusaders tries in the second half.

South Wales Scorpions 30-28 Rochdale Hornets (Sun)

South Wales Scorpions won at home for the first time this season thanks to Kristian Hawkes' last-gasp try at The Gnoll on Sunday.

The Welsh side had won every away game in 2013 but victory in Neath had eluded them, and it looked like it was going to again after the Hornets dominated the second half of a thrilling game.

Hornets led thanks to tries from Wayne English (2), Danny Davies, John Cookson and Dave Hull, with Dave James, Connor Farrer, Jack Murphy and Joe Burke crossing for Scorpions.

But there were only five seconds left on the clock when Hawkes raced over the line to level the scores at 28-28, with Jack Murphy holding his never to kick his fifth successful conversion for Scorpions to claim all three points.
