I knew a young footballer who played at the bottom end of the Scottish Premier League. Said his older team mates hated football and only did it for the money.Winning things is great. Losing isn't.
I enjoyed reading this. Thank you.
Essentially at 18 she lost support from her tennis federation due to her behaviour, having invested a great deal of money into her development. 11 years later she is talking about how hard it is to make a living at 29 on the tennis circuit, not having put in the hard graft between 18-29. This article is laughable. more stories about losers who never had the break that they alone decided to snub.
@81 - Thats way off the mark to suggest players outside top20 will struggle to make a living...would say most of the top50 will be millionaires or at the very least not have to worry too much over paying the bills/mortgage...even those ranked between 50 -100 will be fairly financially comfortable.....those ranked between 100 -200 will probably get by making a reasonable living playing challengers.
Generally, I dislike intensely inane articles on the BBC site but credit where credit's due, this was an excellent read. As someone that often scours the ITF rankings I often wonder about players in the late hundreds. These are incredibly good players that would walk into a county side. But they are just not quite good enough. Eventually most join clubs and become trainers. Thanks Beeb.
Interesting article, well worth a read. Re someone's assertion that only the top 20 players make a living, I had a look at the WTA website for several players ranked around 200 in the singles, and players there were earning from $40k to $400k in the year to date, which is none too shabby in my book.
Oddest concept to me is that for a 29yo £30k is considered a decent crust as an engineer at Volvo.
December 2017. Is there an update? The logistics sound like a right cat's cradle. And to be doing it at 29 is pretty admirable considering she must be playing opponents maybe 10 years younger!?
Same story with african runners in Poland. Come en masse , pick less prestigious , regional runs without medical screenings / doping testing and win smaller prizes i.e 1000/ 800/ 600 pounds for 1 st / 2nd/ 3 rd place . This is causing a huge upset amongst our local runners who cannot compete with well organized African long distance running industry.
@95 It's no different than any other career. Top software developers get big money, juniors don't.
@100 Top sports people on the whole generate the money they are paid through crowds and TV revenue, due to their rare talent. Who should get that money instead? Players who no-one wants to watch? CEO's on the other hand are fairly easily replaceable and their 'market value' is artificially set by themselves.
This applies to so many people, playing so many sports.
