British number one Johanna Konta came from behind to beat 11th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
Konta, ranked 43rd in the world after starting the year in ninth, prevailed 6-7 6-1 6-2.
She was pegged back from a 3-0 lead in the opening set and lost a tie-break 8-6 to the 2017 French Open champion.
But the unseeded 27-year-old dropped only three more games as she took the next two sets in 68 minutes.
Konta will face Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in the second round after the two-time Grand Slam winner beat France's Kristina Mladenovic 6-0 6-1.
Also through is Maria Sharapova, who beat fellow Russian Daria Kasatkina in straight sets.
Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova, a two-time winner at the All England Club, have also taken their places in the last 32.

Totally agree. Don't think anyone can question Jo's ability. It has been her mental toughness that some have called into question.
That is why its great to see her getting these kind of results. Maybe 6 months ago, she would not have won this match. Brilliant to see this improvement.
I think Konta is a class player but she is so frustrating with her inconsistency. She was awful in the first set then an absolutely brilliant display of tennis to dismantle Ostapenko.
On her day she can beat anyone just like she demolished the big Williams last week in straight sets with tennis that was simply unplayable and Williams was thrashed.
As for Sharapova/Kasatkina match, think reporter
got confused cos both played people with the same last initials, K & S. ( Karatantcheva & Sakkari ) in last round. As for Kerber? Cornet match? No idea?
Knew you had to be smart to work for the BBC
Congratulations on being only the 834th person this year to make that joke. The originality is breathtaking.
Your example did not show this. French open seedings are based entirely on ATP rankings, and do not take account of Nadal's known superiority on clay. Moreover, when Federer as no 1, Nadal was usually just one or two places below, not 32 places below, so it's a different situation entirely. Therefore a Nadal victory was never an upset.
"Not really an upset is it? She was favourite to win the match!"
No she wasn't: Konta's ranked 43 in the world, Ostapenko was the 11th seed, and the strong favourite!
You're the one who's made a leap of logic, by extrapolating information and placing it into a different context. You also have to take into account Konta's form this year, which for the most part has been woeful. I don't know what bookies you looked at, but the ones I saw certainly made Ostapenko the favourite, which on form and rankings is what would be expected.
But look at Kerber, Wimbledon champion beaten by a lesser player🤔.
Tennis can be so UNPREDICTABLE or is it a case of loss of concentration, mind being elsewhere as in Serena?
