British number two James Ward was beaten in the first round of the Shanghai Masters as Kevin Anderson came from behind to win 3-6-6-3 6-2.
Ward, a qualifier ranked 119th in the world, took the first set, but the big-serving South African recovered to win the second by the same margin.
Anderson then broke Ward twice early in the third set to forge a 4-0 lead.
Ward, 27, finally managed to win the fifth game, but Anderson held serve to easily clinch the final set.
Anderson will meet Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan in round two.
British number one Andy Murray, seeded 11th, faces Russian qualifier Teymuraz Gabashvili, the world number 55, in his first-round match on Tuesday, not before 11:30 BST.
