Andy Murray admitted he did not show his experience after "scraping through" his third-round tie at the Madrid Open.

Murray's match with Gilles Simon ended at 01:00 local time, and he now faces world number six Tomas Berdych on Friday at 20:00 in the quarter-finals.

"My experience didn't really show because I had a lot of match points and had chances all the way through and couldn't quite get them," Murray said.

"It'll probably be four o'clock by the time I'm in bed and it's not ideal."

Simon defended three match points to force a final set tie-break and then saved another three match points, but the Frenchman netted a volley to hand Murray a 2-6 6-4 7-6 (8-6) victory.

"It was tough. Any professional athlete will tell you it's difficult when you spend the whole day waiting to go on, and sometimes you might come out a little bit flat," world number two Murray, 25, added.

"It wasn't the prettiest match, It wasn't the best match, but I won and I gave myself an opportunity to get through to the semis."

The Madrid Open final is played on 12 May, two weeks before the culmination of the clay-court season at the French Open.
