British number one Elena Baltacha lost to fourth seed Flavia Pennetta in round two of the ASB Classic in Auckland.

The Scot, who beat local wildcard Sacha Jones in the first round, went down 6-4 6-2 to Italy's world number 20.

Baltacha, ranked 51 in the world, will head to Hobart next week before the Australian Open starts on 16 January.

Second seed Peng Shuai, fifth seed Julia Goerges, sixth seed Roberta Vinci and eighth seed Monica Niculescu all lost in Auckland on Wednesday.

Russian third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova had no trouble, however, beating American Christina McHale 6-1 6-1.
