World number two Stuart Bingham secured a narrow victory over Robert Milkins in the first round of the inaugural English Open in Manchester.
The 2015 English world champion had twice trailed by two frames but rallied to win three frames in a row and beat the world number 25 on Monday.
There were wins for Mark Williams and China's Ding Junhui, but Peter Ebdon and Jimmy White exited early.
World number one Mark Selby and Ronnie O'Sullivan are in action on Tuesday.
The tournament winner will receive £70,000 and the Steve Davis trophy, named after the six-time world champion, who retired in April.
The event - from 10-16 October - is part of the new Home Nations series.
Any player who also wins the Northern Ireland, Scottish and Welsh Opens will earn a £1m bonus.
