Late tries from Lloyd Evans and Willi Heinz edged Gloucester to a 35-24 victory over Newcastle.

A frenetic start saw four tries in the opening 20 minutes, with Callum Chick's double and George McGuigan putting the away side in control.

Wales wing Louis Rees-Zammit replied for the Cherry and Whites and Ruan Ackermann and Heinz scored early in the second half to level the scores.

Evans sprinted down the right and Heinz chased a chip through to win the game.

Newcastle had looked in control and took a commanding-looking 14-point lead into the break, their kicking game leading to three converted tries from close range.

Rees-Zammit, one of the stars for Wales in the Six Nations, beat three defenders to touch down one-handed in the corner to give Gloucester hope.

The home side then dominated the second half with Evans, who was also perfect from the tee, running in a carbon-copy of the Rees-Zammit try, and replacement Heinz chasing down an Ackermann kick late on for his second score.

Newcastle's only points of the second period was a Brett Connon penalty that briefly gave them a 24-21 lead.

Gloucester lost their England wing Jonny May to an ankle injury, Santiago Carreras his replacement on 22 minutes, but move above Newcastle into 10th in the Premiership table.
