England will attempt to replicate World Cup travel schedule for autumn Tests

England will attempt to replicate their World Cup schedule by flying back from Portugal just 48 hours before the first autumn international at Twickenham.

Eddie Jones' squad will train in the Algarve for a week, returning to England on the Thursday before facing South Africa on Saturday, 3 November.

England usually spend the week of their home Tests at their base in Bagshot, Surrey.

But Jones wants his side to match the travel conditions in Japan next year.

England's first two matches of the World Cup - against Tonga and the USA in September 2019 - take place four days apart in Sapporo and Kobe, a distance of 1,000km - needing a two-hour flight.

They then have a nine-day break before their third game against Argentina in Tokyo, before the group finale with France in Yokohama a week later.

As well as having extensive experience of Japan from his time as head coach of their national side, Jones has been there this summer to fine-tune England's preparations.

England also face world champions New Zealand, Japan and Australia this November as they bid to turn around a poor run of results, with just three wins from nine matches in 2018.

    @11 it's so boring to hear an Aussie try a straw argument. No England supporter thinks we are world beaters. We were world beaters for about 12 months 2 years ago. It's just boring to hear supporters attempting to quote an England fan that they have never ever heard them say.

    The team I played for had a three hour boat trip across the Irish Sea a few years ago to play a team north of Dublin the day after we arrived and we still won, and we were an amateur team that paid for our own travel and full time jobs.
    Why don’t england just improve their skills and practice more rather than worry about air turbulence.

    Dont see this as a good idea. Why are they training abroad? What for ? They should be training in England ready for a possibly cold and wet November series. No need to worry about the world cup just yet.

    If I started crowing about Ireland being no 2 in the world, GS champions and all that, I would expect a few English and Welsh barbs my way - and rightly so.

    Ireland winning the GS this year is now history. England winning the RWC in '03 is ancient history.

    Bit feeble after the recent run of results, sending out a press release like this. What are we, stupid? The fact is, we need some convincing wins this autumn. Then Eddie can go back to telling us how how clever he is and we can go back to clapping like seals.

    There is around 5-10 degree difference in average temp from Algarve to England so the boys will be coming back to wet and windy awful weather. Is this really what they need before tests a massive shock to the system?

    What a load of nonsense, seems to me that EJ is deflecting his coaching frailties. Never mind replicating travel nonsense, he needs to replicate previous form and he'll only succeed in this if he starts binning a few players and bringing quality youngsters, of which there are plenty, into his squad. EJ needs to grow a set and stop listening to his so called senior players.

    What an extraordinary plan. It's just like 'Let's Pretend'. The world cup is next year, isn't it? Just get home, pull on the shirt and beat the Boks. Confidence is what's needed, not 'this is what it feels like to fly on a plane just before an international'. The ABs must be gutted by England's proposed preparations. Not.

    @155 As an old, probably very fat prop, which means you last played aeons ago why should you disparage Chris Foy and Stephen Jones, who you obviously read, and ask us to listen to you instead? Do you go up and down the country going to games and interviewing players and coaches? Thought not. Ashton, Cipriani, Hartley, their actions speak for themselves, on or off the field.
