Biggar will have the requisite caps after the AIs and the 6ns... as for Pro14 being non competitive... how many English teams made it to the Champions Cup Semis?Funny how some "Welsh" fans are so down on local teams.Gats will be happy to change tune so long he gets to pick favourites. We can't compete with the big money, and we create the big money players...Short careers: follow the £s.
About time too. Getting used to losing with a regional team is no preparation for the international stage. Gatland will do what his employers tell him to do or be sacked. He's been there rather too long as it is - along with Howlers - he needs some regional experience.
"Playing rugby is these guys profession and they should not be denied the right to represent their country"Except playing for a national team isn't a right.
With more Welsh players to leave and have the opportunity to play proper competitive rugby either in England and France, Gatland's law or whatever you will call it will have to change or Wales will be playing a second fiddle team. Not sure with professional rugby and freedom of movement within the EU whether the daft policy is legal anyway.
@105 Tend to agree. Deckchairs on the Titanic...
The OZ policy is sensible when there is a relatively small player base, 50 caps and you can go and get retirement fund and be welcome back is OK. Trying to put too many restraints on trade will only backfire as money talks in the end. One rule will not suit all but should be tried. Fooball's top players play where they like and rugby will go that way too. Argentina w/o Messi wouldn't happen.
As ever Sid talking through the bit doesnt see the sunGatland has just coached his second sucessful Lions tour. I seem to remember a certain Irish fly half playing in France!
The market has a habit of making a mockery of things like this.... here is a stupid policy from a poor coach and bad administrators which needs to be taken out and shot..... amazing that some people are blaming coaches for regional failures when many of the top players have followed the money (unlike IRELAND)
There is no problem in my opinion of players playing anywhere in the world and I actually welcome them playing in the Premiership and France as they play at a far higher level than the PRO14. I would even go as far as searching for Wales qualified players from around the world too. Young players are not playing enough rugby and definitely not for Wales. Look at the summer tour as an example.
There has always a lot of comparison between Irish fans support for teams and Wales. Ireland handled their top tier system much better maintaining their connection between communities and their clubs. Wales threw this down the pan with regions.
Wow. Some people showing their true colours and real passion for what or who they support. Going by the last few statements, would attendance be higher if the BEER was free. Top flight games cost money because of signing top flight players who cost more money. Maybe you guys were drunk when you wrote your comments. Go to the games for the rugby not the getting drunk. More to life than BEER mate
If I can watch regional rugby in my club on a Friday night for £3.00 a pint why would I go to a draughty stadium stand in line for beer then pay a fiver. Then watch the dross served up by the Ospreys/Cardiff/Dragons (Scarlets worth watching) Change the regional coaches at O,C & D lower admission by a fiver, cheap family tickets.Better marketing of the regions would help
Oh my £5 for a plastic pint, thats London prices. I think we hit on why attendance is so low :/
@23 I completely agree. The home nations need to focus on attendances. I have a season ticket for Edinburgh Rugby, but trying to get a few mates along to see a one off game when it's going to cost them £26.50 for pitchside standing and £5 for a plastic pint, is a tough ask.If attendances increase, the money will too.
Why bother having a law at all? There are too many exceptions anyway.
@102. I agree. Maybe the time is right to have a Welsh “A” team. Come the World Cup some from the Under 20’s will be ready for the National Squad and looking beyond 2019 the development of the A team will give a wider indication of the standard required to get selected for the National Team. We will see next month what we’ve got with Gatland back in charge.
Why do they call it Gatlands law? It was brought in by the WRU. Well it aint and it never has worked. Scrap it!! players will always follow the money and we just dont generate the funds in Wales. As for it being our national game far more people play soccer in Wales! After last night its obvious we are not that good at that either!!Apart from Scarlets we have rubbish coaches at the regions.
We as a nation need all our players, what we need is a Wales A team, huge gap from under 20 to national side, we need you develop our pool of players
@91. Posted by manning777I agree with that but its easier to exclude 1 players or maybe two but when you have 5 or 6 who would be pushing for starting spots then its a bit different.
