Paolo Odogwu: Sale Sharks wing resembles Jason Robinson, says Steve Diamond

Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond believes young winger Paolo Odogwu resembles former England great Jason Robinson.

Odogwu, 19, has impressed at the AJ Bell Stadium since joining from Leicester, and was a try-scorer in the 15-5 defeat by Toulon on Friday.

"He's probably the nearest player I have seen to Robbo," says Diamond, who coached Robinson in the early 2000s.

"He's a bit stockier, but his feet are fast and he's learning by the day."

The England Under-20 winger made the move from the East Midlands in the summer, with Diamond excited by the player's potential.

"He has signed for three years with us, so we have a lot to do with him," the Sharks boss added to BBC Radio 5 live.

Odogwu was part of an inexperienced Sale back-line against Toulon, alongside the likes of Sam James, Will Addison and Mike Haley, who have all come through the club's academy.

And Diamond says Sale's youth policy is unlike any other club.

"Young lads do well when they got opportunities, and what we do better than any club in Europe is give people opportunities," he added.

"We've got 19 and 20 year olds out there, in front of a full house, in a European fixture. So anybody out there who can't get in their first-team, come to Sale and I will play you.

"What they lack in experience and a bit of guile, they make up with ambition and desire for the club. They are all local lads and want to do well."

Meanwhile cross-code convert Josh Charnley has started training at Sale this week, following his switch from Super League side Wigan.

Charnley is in line to make his union debut in their Anglo-Welsh Cup match with Wasps on 4 November.
