@48 - you can't just use the 'positive' stats and ignore the very real fact that in a period of 10 months this 'great' welsh team have lost to the lions opponents on 5 separate occasions, there is no justification to this - NH rugby has suffered from mediocrity for sometime and if you believe the performances by wales in last years 6N's were 'great' you are deluded.
How about we save the bickering for 6N posts and support the Lions team and coach whoever is picked. Truth is that Wales won the grand slam last year and you dont do that without some great players so would expect to see quite a few in the side. I am sure the Wales side could be improved with the best players from the other 3 countries too.
(excuse the rafa benitez impression)Fact: Wales played Australia 5 times in 12 month period.......and lost all 5 - last 10 times played wales have won 1 (at home)Fact:England have beaten australia on last 2 occasions (including an away victory) and won 4 of 10.Conclusion: let's encourage gatland to pick 15 welsh blokes and all stick a months wages on the aussies to win 3-0 £££££££
@43 fair comments. Time will tell. Let's see how they do in November tests. Issue here for non welsh posters is we are continually being told how great wales are and have a team full of superstars and that the Lions should be full of welsh and that australia are rubbish. What's changed since June when a rubbish australia still beat your team full of superstars 3-0. Could have won doesn't count!!
@44 - RWC winners and two runner up spots - underperform!! Regular wins against SH teams home and away in the professional era - underperform!! The only times the Lions have won in the professional era ('89 and '97) was when the core of the squad was English. But thanks for the patronising comments anyway.
The reason the All Blacks are so successful is they recognise rugby is a team game. England perennially under-perform because they have a culture of individualism. Gatland has built Wales' current success on the whole being greater than the sum of the parts, the same as New Zealand. When England players and coaches learn this they might feature more prominently on Lions tours.
@42.. Yes we failed 3 times, but could very well have won all 3. We are a young side and will only get better and learn to close games out and stay disciplined.. Why that means you'd be suprised to see "too many" Welshman in there i dont know.. they are still quality players..I expect no-one fears them, however they are more than aware of the damage they can do and know how dangerous they are
Given that Wales have just failed to beat a very average Aussie team 3 times I would be suprised to see too many Welsh boys in there. That said cant ignore members of the pack.Cuthbert, North.....I as an England supporter I do not fear these boys one bit, neither will Aus - I dont expect a single Welshman to agreed with me of course.
It wouldn't have mattered who Woodward picked. The 2005 All Blacks were awesome and would have thumped any Lions team 3-0.The bigger crime was Henry's 2001 Lions team which had a huge number of world class players at their peak and still somehow lost to an Aussie team well passed their sell by date.
Are the Lions only taking 15 players then? You'd think so judging by some of the nonsense on this board....At least 32 players will go (Woodward take 57 or something......). That being the case, the majority of the Wales TEAM (i.e. starting 15) will make it.If he gets close to last seasons form, Warburton will be captain. Don't try to drag him down. It just looks like jealousy.
on current form the welsh players i would choose - Jenkins, adam jones, Warbs, lydiate, A.W Jones, Jones, Phillips, north, cuthbert, Jonathan davis and mabey halfphenny ) number 10 is a problem because none of the 4 nation have a world class 10 ON FORM. Preistland and farrell could do it if they have agood season or maney hook or Sexton. its going to be and interesting season
Spanjor@34 - Graham Henry was a bad Lions coach. No getting away from it. But I doubt you'll find any Englishmen that would claim Woodward wasn't bad either. In he was even worse. But Henry had access to the same England players (past their sell by date in 2005, but at their peak in 2001) and still managed to mess it up. Neither man emerged from their respective tours without a scratch.
I was feeling a bit down in the dumps today and badly needed to roar my head off with laughter and then I read all the comments from the one eyed welsh posters. Keep it up chaps. I am going to need surgery to get my sides stapled from all the laughing I have done. Absolutely priceless!
Lets hope have torrential rain if Scottish players are selected
He can't coach a 6N team the same year as a Lions tour because he won't be able to view all the games and will have other more pressing concerns. I wonder if as Lions coach he can watch any team's training sessions but if he was the Wales and Lions coach I'm sure he couldn't.And giving him a year break from his Welsh team may be good for both him and the Welsh players.
Plus I'm fed up of all the English people saying Henry was a bad Lions coach, as all i have to do is mention Clive Woodward's 2005 lions coach which resulted in a whitewash because he picked mainly his world cup squad as he favoured them over the other nations, so they lost as the majority of the English players in the squad were past their sell by date
I don't know why everybody is moaning about Gatland being Lions Coach by saying it will lead to Welsh Domination.Gatland is a fair coach and will pick on performance not loyalty.
There was one six nations team which did win a test this summer in the Southern Hemisphere.Perhaps some of their players should be considered!
If everyone's playing to form, Youngs and Ashton are the first two names I'd have on the team sheet, then Tuilagi and Roberts. Unless a real star shines through the 6N the biggest problem is going to be No 10.If I was an Australian charged with picking the Lions test side the first name I'd have on the Lions team sheet would be Phillips.I don't know what sport adonohoe (26 below) watches!
