Fringe players to get Exeter Chiefs chance

Exeter boss Rob Baxter is calling on his fringe players to prove themselves in their LV=Cup match at Saracens.

Baxter picked a second-choice side for their 35-9 win over Ospreys and will give those players a second chance at Saracens on Sunday.

The Chiefs then face Premiership leaders Harlequins a week on Saturday.

"These guys we pick have got to play well if they want to get into the team for the bigger game the week after," Baxter told BBC Radio Devon.

"We're hoping that after this week we'll have a group of 35-36 players fit with plenty of game time in them, and all very keen on playing in our next Premiership game," Baxter added.

Australian scrum-half Pat Phibbs gets a first start as he nears the end of his short-term contract as cover for Junior Poluleuligaga, as does Myles Dorrian at full-back.

But Baxter reiterated that it is up to his less regular players to give him selection problems.

"If we go up there and the guys selected for this fixture play out of their skins it's going to be a tough meeting next Monday.

"If we go up there and let ourselves down it kind of becomes a little bit easy and that's the harsh reality of professional sport," he added.

With three of the four teams in Exeter's group winning matches last week, a victory is vital if the Chiefs want to progress to the knockout stages of the competition.
