Exeter Chiefs fly-half Gareth Steenson has said he is looking forward to the fight for the number 10 spot next term.

The 27-year-old Ulsterman, who was the Chiefs' top points scorer last season, will face stiff competition from Myles Dorrian and Ignacio Meires.

"Competition is what you want," said Steenson. "You want guys pushing hard in every position.

"It's great for the three of us, so we've got to go away, work hard and try and get that jersey."

He added: "I've played played against Myles many times when he was at Coventry and then Bedford and I always regarded him as one of the best 10s I played against in the Championship.

"Obviously Ignacio came in and started to play really well towards the end of the year."

Having confounded the critics by finishing eighth in their debut season, the Chiefs face rising expectations for the new campaign.

Steenson said: "We won't be a surprise package, but I think it works both ways.

"Whereas we went into last season not knowing what to expect, by and large we learned quite a bit from it.

"This season we will have that year's experience under our belts, so we're only going to be better for that. Hopefully we can perform well and establish ourselves again."
