St Helens extended their lead at the top of Super League to 12 points after they easily swept aside Wakefield.

Danny Richardson crossed over first for the hosts while Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook and Tommy Makinson increased their lead before half-time.

Kevin Naiqama added to Saints' score as they sailed to a comfortable 26-2 lead heading into the final stages.

Kelepi Tanginoa ran in a late try for Wakefield but it was a mere consolation for the visitors.

Saints went into the game on the back of the announcement that head coach Justin Holbrook will take over Gold Coast Titans in 2020.

Holbrook has transformed St Helens since his arrival in 2017, with Friday's win further boosting their strong chances of winning the League Leaders' Shield for the second successive season.

Wakefield had won just one of their past 10 league and cup games going into the match and have dropped into the bottom half of the table.

St Helens head coach Justin Holbrook:

"It was a really good performance from us tonight after an emotional week.

"It has been very tough and I'm trying not to make it about me. I was really proud of the way they played tonight.

"Defensively we were fantastic and I thought we handled the second half well and got the win, which was the main thing tonight."

Wakefield head coach Chris Chester:

"I thought we tried hard and never gave in but we had a tough 12-minute period where we didn't touch the ball and Saints scored three tries.

"There was not a great deal between the two sides all night but we didn't show any real patience in the final third of the field.

"I let some of the players know at half-time that it wasn't good enough - a few players were taking short cuts.

"They have trained really hard during the week but we need to fix what we do with the ball. We got outsmarted."
