Super League leaders St Helens overcame Huddersfield to secure a Challenge Cup quarter-final tie against Wakefield.

The 12-times winners edged a tight first half with tries from Regan Grace and Theo Fages, as the Giants crossed through Joe Wardle and Aaron Murphy.

Lachlan Coote's score early in the second half took them further clear but Wardle hit straight back for the hosts.

The game was decided by Fages' high kick, tipped back by Tommy Makinson, which Kevin Naiqama touched down.

The scramble of Saints and Huddersfield bodies on the try line meant the video referee had to look long and hard to make sure no visiting player knocked on in the build-up to the Fijian eventually getting his hand on the ball.

Justin Holbrook's side then showed all of the steel that has taken them to the top of the league table by seeing out the final 20 minutes.

St Helens will no doubt be looking to make up for lost time in this season's Challenge Cup having failed to reach Wembley since 2008 - the last of three successive triumphs.

For Simon Woolford's improving team this was a much better performance than when these sides met at John Smith's Stadium in March, when they were easily beaten.

Huddersfield's focus now turns to their Super League campaign, where they are currently ninth and just four points above bottom club London Broncos.
