Super League: Widnes 26-28 Wakefield
Widnes (12) 26
- Brown 2, Mellor, Dean, Joseph
- Ah Van 2
Wakefield (16) 28
- Smith 2, Aiton, Cockayne, Wilkes
- Sykes 3
Wakefield full-back Lee Smith grabbed two more tries as the Wildcats held on to win at the Stobart Stadium.
Trinity led 16-12 at the break, tries from Smith, Paul Aiton and Ben Cockayne just helping to edge the visitors ahead, in response to efforts by Kevin Brown and Joe Mellor for the home side.
Brown and Chris Dean scored again after the break, while Phil Joseph added a late consolation try.
But, with Oliver Wilkes crossing too, Paul Sykes' boot proved the difference.
He outscored Patrick Ah Van three kicks to two to take his tally to 38 for the season - the sixth best in Super League 2013.
That earned Wakefield their fifth successive victory over Widnes - to help the visitors climb above their hosts on scoring difference, to 10th in the table.
VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Widnes coach Denis Betts:
"The scoreline did not flatter us. I can't fault our effort but we have to learn to be tougher.
"Some crucial calls went against us. It was a dubious penalty against Ben Cross which made it 28-20.
"But they handled our pressure really well and we weren't smart enough."
Wakefield coach Richard Agar:
"Paul Aiton was a constant threat from dummy half. Pound for pound, he is a tremendous player. If being left out of the Exiles squad gives him an extra focus, that's good for us.
"Danny Kirmond did a terrific job on Gareth Hock, who is a devastating and destructive forward, Rhys Hanbury and Kevin Brown give them an enormous threat down the right but we handled them well. And Oliver Wilkes' try was special. He has kept that speed hidden for a while.
"A couple of decisions went for us but we have been on the wrong end of a few this season and they level out."
