Wembley Statue nominee: Eric Ashton

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats head coach Richard Agar discusses the talents of Eric Ashton, who was the first person to win the Challenge Cup as a captain, coach and chairman.

Ashton has been nominated to be immortalised with a statue at Wembley Stadium after a pioneering career that saw him become the first Rugby League player to be honoured by the Queen in 1966 and win three Challenge Cup winners medals.

On Thursday 23 August the RFL Board will officially announce which of a six strong short list - Billy Boston, Eric Ashton, Martin Offiah, Gus Risman, Alex Murphy, or a group representation - will be immortalised outside Wembley. You can give the RFL your views by sending an e-mail to wembley.statue@rfl.uk.com.
