Carmarthen-based CPC Bears rugby league club have officially expressed an interest in joining the Co-operative Championships in 2013.

The Bears, formed in 2010, are currently playing in the amateur Rugby League Conference.

The Rugby Football League are keen to expand the Championships from 2012 onwards.

Prospective clubs have until next Friday to lodge an interest.

"We believe there are the player numbers and supporters in west Wales to support the CPC Bears in the Championships," said CPC Bears chairman Geraint Jones.

The club want to represent the three most western counties of Wales - Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion - in the second tier of the professional game.

"Rugby is massively popular in the area and, with rugby league being a summer sport, there is room for both," added Jones.

"We would bring a very open Welsh style of rugby as a fresh new club with a fresh outlook, new faces and interesting new people."

If the Bears bid is successful they would be Wales' third professional rugby league team.

South Wales Scorpions, based in Neath, are currently in Championship 1, while Wrexham-based Crusaders play in Super League.
