Gracenote I see have Russia coming 3rd with 66 medals. Hmmm? Think Gracenote might need to up their research game. And the BBC ought to not report such badly researched nonsense.
This is probably expected. We invested a lot in athletes for the 2012 games, and this had a lasting effect on the next games, now we are likely to return to a more normal result. Probably happens to all nations who host the olympics
Sport isn't played on paper. Injuries, the weather, sicknesses, diet, psychology, and team spirit all play a part and are largely unpredictable.
@59 - except Rio 2016 was the peak in total medals won...
Gracenote simply use performance at recent championships as a marker of expected Olympics positions. It does matter for individuals as well as the various sporting communities. GB will probably do a bit worse than before, with well being issues seen as being as important. Just look at what has happened to some of the 'winners' from Rio!
Yawn, statistical hypothetical nonsense. 2012 was the peak due to a home games, of course funding and medals will go down in the subsequent years. I wonder how much this company was paid to deliver a conclusion a 14yo learning to use EXCEL would have produced in 20 minutes.
6. Posted by Be Yourself on 3 hours ago'Even if only 48 medals, GB+NI still punching well above our weight. 'Spend to succeed. We waste millions on these inane events so idiots can wave their flags and think their country is somehow great. Spend it on something worthwhile.
The Olympics have been past their sell-by-date since most sports went professional. Also agree with @45 charlieboy. We're funding too many of them to go on and make their money as celebs on the various banal reality shows that pollute the TV, or become crap presenters/commentators/pundits.

Artistic gymnastics!! Lol
Which countries actually bother rowing or take it seriously? Can't imagine many with a 2000m lake to host a competition. Takes a monumental balls up not to win a few golds in that.
What a load of old rubbish!
Sport is all about peaking at the right time.I expect the GB Team to be at peak performance for the Olympics.
What a waste of space this piece is. In other words a company that exists to get these things right, got the forecasts woefully wrong last time and now predict the same pattern again for Tokyo. I suppose they may eventually get one right!!
