Hillsborough-based Clare Abbott produced a superb clear round in the showjumping to finish 37th in the Three-day Eventing at the Olympics.

Abbott, who was making her Games debut on Europrince, helped Ireland to eighth place in the Team event.

Ireland's Jonty Evans finished ninth after he also had a clear round at the Olympic Equestrian Centre in Rio on Cooley Rorke's Drift.

Mark Kyle was 33rd as Germany's Michael Jung retained his Olympic title.

Jung won aboard Sam, who was a late replacement when Fischertakinou contracted an infection in July.

France's Astier Nicolas took silver and American Phillip Dutton won bronze as GB's William Fox-Pitt finished 12th.

France won Olympic team gold as Great Britain missed out on a medal for the first time since 1996.

A faultless show jumping round from Astier Nicolas secured first place.

Runners-up Germany, bronze medallists Australia, and New Zealand were all in contention going into the final round.
