Monaghan were too strong for Waterford at Fraher Field

Monaghan thrashed Waterford by 27 points at Fraher Field to reaffirm their Super 8 credentials.

Conor McManus, Karl O'Connell and Fintan Kelly scored goals as the Farneyman dominated their Division Four opponents from the throw-in.

Dessie Mone and Shane Carey added further three-point scores for Malachy O'Rourke's side.

Monaghan exited the Ulster SFC in the semi-finals as they fell to a shock defeat by Fermanagh.

McManus slotted home a penalty on 15 minutes after Ryan McAnespie was brought down inside the square.

Tyholland man O'Connell scored the pick of the goals, beating three tacklers before unleashing a powerful finish into the corner.

Kelly then found the net on the stroke of half-time as Malachy O'Rourke's side scored 2-11 in the opening 35 minutes.

The gulf in class between the sides was evident throughout as the movement of the Farneymen's inside-forward line left Waterford's defence chasing shadows for long spells.

Replacements Mone and Carey added a further goals in the second half while the home side's best goal chance fell to JJ Hutchinson whose effort came back of the woodwork.

Waterford's first round win against Wexford was their first championship victory in seven years.

In front of a big attendance at Fraher Field, Monaghan's undeniable superiority shone through as they put any lingering doubts about their quality to bed in emphatic fashion.
