Michael Murphy is in danger of missing all of this year's National Football League because of a groin injury.
The Donegal skipper is scheduled to see a specialist early this week and there is a possibility that he will have to undergo surgery.
Donegal manager Jim McGuinness said after Sunday's McKenna Cup defeat by Cavan that any decision would be taken in "Michael's best interests".
Murphy captained Donegal to last year's Ulster Football title.
He is regarded as one of the best forwards on the intercounty scene.
