Colin Turkington finished fifth in the British Touring Car series after taking a fourth place in the final race of the championship at Brands Hatch on Sunday.

The BMW driver's slim title hopes were in tatters after a first-lap crash in race one and the Portadown man ended 12th in another rain-drenched race two.

Turkington's fortunes improved dramatically in the day's third race.

The Northern Ireland driver ended on 347 points, 50 points behind newly-crowned champion Andrew Jordan.

2012 champion Gordon Shedden was second with 390, followed by Jason Plato (380) and Matt Neal (356).

Plato won the first race of the day at Brands Hatch and also took the chequered flag in race two, 32 seconds ahead of 12th-placed Turkington.

Shedden was the race three winner, with title winner Jordan ninth.

Turkington secured five wins during the season, one at Donington in April, two at Croft in June and two at Knockhill in August.
