So, let's recap all the Sunday action (so far) at Roland Garros.

  5. 'A very important victory'

    Auger-Aliassime 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3 3-6 Nadal

More from Rafael Nadal, speaking about his opponent Felix Auger-Aliassime:

"He's a great player, one of the best in the world, very young with a lot of power and great mobility. He did a lot of things well, improving every year, I wish him all the best for the rest of the season.

It's a very important victory for me without a doubt. I didn't start well, I had a lot of opportunities in the first set but did not come back.

"After coming back in the next two, I finished the third much better. I'm very happy with the attitude at the end because I was able to be more aggressive and go to the net near the end, which made a difference without a doubt."

On facing Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals:

"We know each other well, have a lot of history, here we are in Roland Garros, it is my favourite place without a doubt. I will be focussed and fight to the end as always."

  7. 'I play here with the most emotions in the world'

    Auger-Aliassime 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3 3-6 Nadal

Rafael Nadal, speaking on court after his win...

"I always play here with the most emotions in the world.

"The most important [place] of my career and I'm just happy I get to play here again."

  8. 'They just can't beat him'

    Auger-Aliassime 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3 3-6 Nadal

    Naomi Cavaday

    BBC Sport tennis commentator

Physically how can Nadal at this stage in his career, with a foot that makes him limp around - how can it be that Nadal outlasts someone like Auger-Aliassime?

They just can't do it. They can't beat him.

It wil be hugely difficult for Nadal to recover in time, but if anyone can do it, he can.

  9. Post update

    Auger-Aliassime 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3 3-6 Nadal

Nadal will take on old foe Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals. What a cracker that will be on Tuesday.

It will be the 59th meeting between the pair.

  10. Post update

    Auger-Aliassime 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3 3-6 Nadal

    David Law

Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

Auger-Aliassime has shown guts and tenacity.

But the most tenacious champion that this place has ever seen is Rafael Nadal.

  11. Game, set and match Nadal

    Auger-Aliassime 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3 3-6 Nadal

He needs only one match point.

    Rafael Nadal wraps up a 3-6 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-3 win in four hours 21 minutes.

Extraordinary. He's through to his 16th quarter-final at Roland Garros.

  12. Post update

    Auger-Aliassime 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3 3-5 Nadal*

Auger-Aliassime nabs the first point but Nadal levels on a second serve. He moves to 30-15, finding the angles at the net. Auger-Aliassime looks a frustrated figure.

He brings up two match points with another sublime effort into the corner.

    Here. We. Go?

  13. 'You know Rafa is going to go big'

    Auger-Aliassime 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3 3-5 Nadal*

    Naomi Cavaday

    BBC Sport tennis commentator

You know that a champion like Rafa is going to up it, he's going to go big, he's going to be aggressive and Auger-Aliassime just sat back a bit.

Any gap available - Nadal will find it.

  14. Nadal breaks

    Auger-Aliassime 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3 3-5 Nadal*

The crowd inside Chatrier are LOUD as Nadal goes 30-0 up on Auger-Aliassime's serve, yet equally as loud as the young Canadian fights for a point back.

Nadal gets two break points with an astounding forehand that loops into the corner. Auger-Aliassime stops him from taking the first with an ace. Not the second though.

Nadal gets a break and will serve for the match!

  15. Post update

    Jonathan Jurejko

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

The recent spruce up of Court Philippe Chatrier included the addition of a motivational quote on each sideline.

"La victoire appartient au plus opiniatre," is on the stand behind the chair umpire.

"Victory belongs to the most tenacious," is the English translation on the other.

That will certainly apply to whoever wins this absorbing battle.

    * Auger-Aliassime 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3 3-4 Nadal

    Naomi Cavaday

    BBC Sport tennis commentator

It's been a bumpy whether you're a Felix fan or a Rafa fan. Something slightly newer to consider though - is it the case that the best of five doesn't suit him anymore?

Auger-Aliassime looks fairly fresh, over all.

Sho: This is the best I've ever seen Auger-Aliassime play. Given the opponent and the surface he's playing him on.

  18. Post update

    *Auger-Aliassime 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-3 3-4 Nadal

An easy love-hold for Nadal and he marches to his chair. He means business and won't go down without a fight.

This one has got everyone gripped, even outside Court Philippe-Chatrier.
