On the way out of Court-Simonne Mathieu, a tall fella with a grey hood pulled high and a white towel over the top bounces past.

Solid protection from the rain. Even better disguise. It’s Gael Monfils.

  4. What's happened today?

If you missed any of the action earlier, we've got reports across the BBC Sport website and you can scroll back through this live text to relive Roger Federer's comfortable victory over Lorenzo Sonego on his return to Paris.

Elsewhere, there was a shock exit for Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber. The German fifth seed lost 6-4 6-2 to world number 81 Anastasia Potapova.

But Spanish 19th seed Garbine Muguruza came from a set down to beat American Taylor Townsend 5-7 6-2 6-2.

There were wins for Greek sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, Japanese seventh seed Kei Nishikori and former US Open champion Marin Cilic.

The match of the day was arguably Nicolas Mahut's victory - the 37-year-old produced an upset, coming from two sets down to beat 16th seed Marco Cecchinato of Italy 2-6 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 6-2 6-4.

  5. Post update

Venus Williams has now failed to make it beyond the first round at Roland Garros in four of her past seven visits.

Her best finish at the French Open was a losing finalist to sister Serena in 2002.

  6. Post update

Elina Svitolina will play Ukrainian world number 67 Kateryna Kozlova in the next round. Which on paper, should be a much easier prospect than this match was.

And she made it look easy.

Never mind the French, Svitolina is receiving her most vocal support from a patriotic Ukrainian fella sat a few rows behind Gael Monfils.

Wearing a Ukraine blue and yellow curly wig, along with a traditional national shawl of the same colour, he stands to his feet during the changeover and launches into a loud rhythmic clap of support.

He’s on his own. Ten out of ten for endeavour - and confidence - though.

  11. Svitolina breaks

    *Svitolina 6-3 5-3 V Williams

Double-fault from Venus. She gives the break to Svitolina, who will now serve for the match.

  12. Post update

    Svitolina 6-3 4-3 V Williams*

Svitolina wants this wrapped up before the rain comes. She slams a winner down the line and hits the exact same spot seconds later.

A net volley does the job and brings up two break points.

    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

Uh oh. A few hoods go over heads, some brollies are popped. A dark rain cloud has swooped over Roland Garros. Play goes on...

  14. Svitolina holds

    Svitolina 6-3 4-3 V Williams*

Oh, nice! A forehand fizzes off Svitolina's racquet and just kisses the line. She's then sent scurrying around court but reads the drop shot and slices it into the open space.

She rounds off an impressive game with a smart forehand to hold and move ahead.

  15. Svitolina breaks

    *Svitolina 6-3 3-3 V Williams

A lovely, cross-court winner and Svitolina is level in the second set. Can she hold and put the pressure back on Williams?

Svitolina has come out on top in a few rallies and she does so again here. Venus responds with a whipping serve to make it 30-30.

Two service holds in a row. What a treat!

  18. Game and third set Schwartzman

  19. Svitolina holds

    Svitolina 6-3 2-3 V Williams*

Svitolina is sent on a bit of a merry-go-round on the baseline, running from side-to-side before Venus fires a winner to move up to 30-30.

A few pacy serves do the job for Svitolina and she holds too.

    Svitolina
  20. Williams holds

    *Svitolina 6-3 1-3 V Williams

HOLD. Venus has held serve people!!

Much better from the American, who mixes it up and reaps the reward.
