The world number one? The nine-time champion? The 2015 champion? Or the young pretender?

  3. Semi-final line-up complete

    Murray 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-0) 6-1 Nishikori

So that is the men's semi-final line-up complete for this year's French Open.

Andy Murray will play Stan Wawrinka while Dominic Thiem's reward for beating Novak Djokovic is a last four match against the imperious Rafael Nadal.

Those matches will be played on Friday.

    Andy Murray and Carlos Ramos

In a funny way, Andy Murray may have umpire Carlos Ramos to thank for that turn-around.

The Scot was riled when Ramos called a time violation after Murray had just pulled out of a serve.

At that point Murray trailed by a set and was locked in a nervy service game at the start of the second.

Murray powered through that game with a big cry of "let's go" and a fist pump in the umpire's direction and from there, minus the odd blip, took control.

Simon: Andy Murray has done brilliantly to reach the semi finals, have to say he's the underdog at this point though.

Chanice Hird: A big test but Andy came through with flying colours! Didn't think he would get to this stage! Well done!

    Murray 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-0) 6-1 Nishikori

Andy Murray after his win over Kei Nishikori: "It was windy and the timing was difficult. Once I got into better rhythm I was able to keep him further away."

On the prospect of facing Stan Wawrinka in the semi-final: "He has played fantastic this tournament so far. Last year when we met he was playing very well and I had to play one of my best matches on clay to beat him.

"It not always been easy for me here but the last few years have been great.

  7. Murray through to semi-finals

    Murray 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-0) 6-1 Nishikori

Murray is now into his 21st Grand Slam semi-final where he will face Swiss third seed Stan Wawrinka.

Those two met in the semi-final last year with Murray playing one of his best clay-court matches to reach the final.

    Murray 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-0) 6-1 Nishikori

A good work out for the British number one.

He struggled with Kei Nishikori's power early on but fought back impressively.

Another win the bag. The world number one is getting stronger and stronger.

  9. Game, set and match

    *Murray 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-0) 5-1 Nishikori

This looks done and dusted. No more drama to come surely?

Murray fires down another serve and is on the brink.

    Two match points...

  11. Post update

    *Murray 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-0) 5-1 Nishikori

"Move your legs," shouts Murray in his Scottish tones as he lets two break points slip.

Not this time. He steps in and whacks a return and seals the double break.

    The end is nigh.

    Murray 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-0) 4-1 Nishikori*

I've doubted Kei Nishikori once in this match and he came came to break Murray in the following game but he can't have much left here.

He puts two forehands out at the start of the next game and things look like they're slipping away.

Another error. Three break points Murray.

    Murray 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-0) 4-1 Nishikori*

What a difference a strong serve can make.

Nishikori is struggling for cheap points in his own service games but Murray uses his first shot of the rally to race to 40-0.

Nishikori makes a right mess of a simple shot at the net but I don't think he is too bothered, that game already looked out of his reach.

    Barry Flatman

Sunday Times tennis correspondent on BBC Radio 5 live

That was another strange point. Murray should have finished it off about three times before he did.

I wonder how much ground both players covered doing that one point?

  15. Murray breaks

    *Murray 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-0) 3-1 Nishikori

What a point! Both players in to the net and out again like they're doing the hokey cokey.

Murray just doesn't give up. He keeps the ball in play and eventually Nishikori relents. A break secured for the second time in this set.

    Murray 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-0) 2-1 Nishikori*

Nishikori has looked unsure on his overheads all day and he fails to put another away before Murray makes him pay by finding the clay by his feet with the next shot.

Murray senses the opening. Wide from Nishikori. Two more break points to Murray.

I thought, given evidence we'd seen in the clay-court season, that if Andy Murray made it into the second week then very good.
