  1. Goodnight all!

    Stan Wawrinka

And hence it is time for us to give you a kiss goodnight.

How would you reflect on the tournament? Andy Murray out in the quarter-finals but Great Britain broke records for getting so many players through the early rounds.

But ultimately, it's winners that are remembered. Stan Wawrinka met everything before him head on, ripping through challenges with his backhand and finding answers where others couldn't.

We will see you for Grand Slam tennis in 2017. We know you'll be with us in Australia in January.

For now, goodnight, thanks for the tweets and keep working on that backhand.

A look at the stats and the one that stands out is the number of winners which divided our finalists.

Stan Wawrinka hit 46 - many of them from that silky yet destructive backhand - Novak Djokovic managed 30.

The trophy in the hands of Stan Wawrinka is a miracle worker as it takes the focus off his terrible wardrobe choice.

  7. 'Wawrinka got through each hurdle'

    Jeff Tarango

Former professional tennis player on 5 live sports extra

Wawrinka didn't play as well in the first three rounds as he did in the rest of the tournament. Dan Evans had an overhead and a volley to put it away, he should have been out of the tournament but he came back with a flourish. He just got through each hurdle he had to get through to win this one match.

  10. Champion reaction

    Djokovic 7-6 4-6 5-7 3-6 Wawrinka

US Open champion Stan Wawrinka speaks on court: "I don't know what's happening right now. I played almost four hours. First I must say about Novak. You're a great champion, a great person, because of you I'm where I am today. I'd like to congratulate you on everything you have done.

"This is amazing. I came here without the gal of winning it but stepped on the court trying to win the match. I played a lot of tennis, I cam completely empty. There was so much emotion with the crowd, the atmosphere, the stadium, it's been an amazing night.

"My goal is to give everything I have to be the best I can. I never had a goal to win a Grand Slam but I am trying as best I can. Match after match I was playing better. One last thing, today has been a big battle on the court but there is a bigger thing so I just want to remember what happened 15 years ago."

  13. Wawrinka deserved to win - Djokovic

Novak Djokovic is asked what he told Stan Wawrinka at the net and the coy Serb adds: "I cannot tell you that. It was a friendly chat."

The world number one adds: "Congratulations, Stan, to your team as well. This has been absolutely deserved today. You were more courageous player in the decisive moment and he deserves his title.

"At this level, after playing seven, eight months of the season, obviously you're not very fresh but coming into the Grand Slam final you are giving it your best. We both felt it. We both felt the demanding match that we played today, but he came on top, he was the better player, tougher mentally.

"It was a fantastic couple of weeks for me. I didn't know if I was going to come a few weeks before because I struggled physically. If someone had told me I was going to play in the final I would definitely have accepted it."

  17. A stark contrast

    Djokovic 7-6 4-6 5-7 3-6 Wawrinka

The man wearing a hot raspberry outfit is in the stands to embrace his family. Novak Djokovic just sits in his chair. He's been here before of course. He remains on 12 Grand Slam wins. Roger Federer leads the way on 17.

These are the moments where you either live out your dreams or are simply left to sit and contemplate a failure.

Alice Stainer: SO impressed by Stan Wawrinka. Might be wearing sizzling pink, but Stan the Man is ice cool. He has fought & fought this

  19. Wawrinka wins the US Open

    Djokovic 7-6 4-6 5-7 3-6 Wawrinka

We end six minutes short of four hours. Stan Wawrinka, as was much publicised, started this match having played 17 hours and 54 minutes in the tournament compared to the eight hours and 58 minutes Novak Djokovic has amassed during the event.

But what's fatigue when a Grand Slam is on the line? That's three Grand Slam finals for Stan and three wins. He's supercharged when it matters.

    Russell Fuller

Wawrinka is the Grand Slam final specialist, three Grand Slam finals and three Grand Slam finals won - that's 11 finals in a row he's won. He's played 27 sets, but he just looked more match tight. Wawrinka has taken his chance incredibly well.
