'I'm intrigued by his story'

Federer on his next opponent, British qualifier Marcus Willis: "I was very intrigued about his story, it is what our sport needs, where guys come from nowhere. We have had a hard time producing those players and I am really looking forward to playing him, couldn’t be more excited.

"It is a huge moment for him I am still on way back as well, his story unbelievable and it just shows depth of men’s tennis."

How the Brits fared on day one

Marcus WIllis was the British hero on day one of Wimbledon 2016 as the British number 23 booked a place in round two against Roger Federer. And he was joined later by Dan Evans.

But compatriots  Kyle Edmund and Laura Robson both lost in straight sets, with four other Britons also beaten in the opening round. 

James Ward went down to defending champion Novak Djokovic, while Alex Ward, Jamie Broady and Brydan Klein were also beaten.

Three-time Wimbledon singles champions on BBC TV

The crowd loved this. They didn't expect the match to be this close or entertaining.

Roger was frustrated for a good bit but the way he ended will make him feel a whole lot better.

The Centre Court crowd quietly chortle as Gudio Pelle comes zooming into the net to meet a Roger Federer tap-over and falls over on his bum.

It seemed to throw the Argentine off his stride a little as, from 0-30, Federer recovers to hold. 

We're still going with serve in this one. It's like a defensive game of chess.

A beaut of backhand sees Britain's Dan Evans beat Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany in four sets.

It means the British number six is into the second round at SW19 for the first time and he claims his first ever main draw match.

I have not seen Pella play a great deal, but I have some, and his serve has got better and better.

This has been extremely educational to watch guy like this, a player who 80 per cent of people don't know him. 

For Roger though, he doesn't show it, but he is frustrated right now.

Don't panic

Much as England skipper Wayne Rooney would love to be at Centre Court with his wife Coleen, the Manchester United striker/midfielder has other matters on his mind.

England, of course, take on Iceland for a place in the Euro 2016 quarter-finals from 20:00 BST.
