It might be a 'friendly' but there is always time for a bit of pushing and shoving.

England are unhappy with something at the base of the ruck.

Courtney Lawes is involved but the referee restores order and play can resume.

Jonny May crosses the line but it doesn't count as Owen Farrell throws a forward pass in the tackle.

England catch the ball at the line-out and the shove comes on.

But they concede the penalty as Italy win possession from the maul.

  5. Replacement

    England 23-0 Italy

That is the last action for Ben Youngs, who has been much better tonight after a dismal showing against Ireland. The scrum-half is parked up for the night as Willi Heinz heads on.

  6. Post update

    England 23-0 Italy

With nearly an hour gone, England are hungry for more.

They win a penalty at the scrum and Ben Youngs is off again before Italy are penalised for another offside.

This time England kick for touch and the decision is met with huge cheers from the Newcastle faithful.

  7. Replacement

    England 23-0 Italy

Luke Cowan-Dickie is on the pitch as hooker Jamie George cools his heels back on the bench.

And Matt Kvesic is brought on in the back row in place of Billy Vunipola, who is off to be bubble wrapped for the trip to Tokyo.

  8. Post update

    England 23-0 Italy

England have their tails up now and they are streaming forward in numbers.

Ben Youngs is pulling the strings and its seems so much more fluid with George Ford playing outside him.

    Paul Grayson

Former England fly-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

That was Joe Marchant sending a message to Eddie Jones. He is ready and willing to step on a plane if there is an injury in midfield.

    Becky Grey

BBC Sport at St James’ Park

    Wow. That was loud.

This is what the crowd came for.

  11. Converted try - England 23-0 Italy

    Joe Marchant (con Owen Farrell)

He may not be going to Japan but Joe Marchant has his first international try!

It comes from the base of the scrum as Ben Youngs finds the centre, who does the rest.

He steps past his marker before bursting clear and dotting down under the posts.

    Owen Farrell adds the extras.

  12. Post update

    England 16-0 Italy

England have the penalty at the scrum and Owen Farrell punts it long for the corner.

The hosts retain possession from the line-out and George Ford takes the ball to the line before feeding Jonny May.

The winger is stopped in his tracks but this is better urgency from England.

  13. Replacement

    England 16-0 Italy

Ruaridh McConnochie's debut is done. Off he trots to be replaced by the considerably bigger figure of Joe Cokanasiga...

  14. Post update

Again, Italy are not clinical at the line-out and they knock on inside the English half.

England can now relieve the pressure with a scrum.

  15. Post update

    England 16-0 Italy

The throw is poor and England steal possession at the line-out.

The men in red throw it wide, looking for the exciting Jonny May, but he is marshaled into touch by the blue shirts.

  16. Post update

    England 16-0 Italy

    Becky Grey

BBC Sport at St James’ Park

The crowd are loving Carlo Canna for repeatedly kicking to the corner.

This is their one chance to watch live Test rugby in Newcastle and they want tries - regardless of who scores them.

  17. Post update

    England 16-0 Italy

Italy have recovered well from conceding that Ben Young's try as they win the penalty inside the English 22.

Charlie Ewels is peanlised for being offside and Carlo Canna kicks for the corner.

    Better from the Azzurri.

  18. Replacement

    England 16-0 Italy

    Here comes George Ford.

He is on for Piers Francis, meaning Owen Farrell will shuffle out to 12 and the Leicester Tiger will go to 10.

Will he add more creativity to this England backline?

  19. Post update

    England 16-0 Italy

Having just kicked the conversion, Owen Farrell is nearly caught out inside his own half as his clearing kick is charged down.

England scamper back to collect the ball and clear their lines but there was a moment of panic then.

  20. Post update

    England 16-0 Italy

    Paul Grayson

Former England fly-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

That was a nice mix of the bludgeon and the rapier with a big carry from Billy Vunipola before the ball was kicked across field by Owen Farrell to Jonny May.
