So, not a bad start to the 2017-18 season. Plenty to chew over there.

We'll head off now and get our beauty sleep before returning on Saturday to take you through three more games.

    Until then....

That not enough excitement for you for one weekend?

  4. Reaction

    FT: Gloucester 28-21 Exeter

    Woodward celebration

Gloucester second row Jeremy Thrush on BT Sport:

"For episodes of the game, we were defending but we stayed strong, kept the faith and got through there in the end.

"We showed a lot of grit and looked after the ball when we did have it and took our opportunities.

"Last year we had so many close calls and gave them away - but we're a stronger squad now."

  5. FT: Gloucester 28-21 Exeter

    Gloucester celebrate

I think there may be a few packed out public houses in Gloucester tonight after that finish...

  6. Post update

Well, that's not a bad way to kick-off a new season is it?!

  7. Full-time

    Newcastle 35-8 Warriors

    Socino try

All over at Kingston Park and Newcastle have been clinical on the opening night to score four tries and take a bonus point for their troubles.

Worcester were punished for a series of sloppy errors and they will have a lot of work to do to repair the damage done this evening.

  8. Full-time

    Gloucester 28-21 Exeter

    The champions have been beaten!

A bonus-point victory for perennial underachievers Gloucester, thanks to a dramatic last-minute try from Jason Woodward.

  9. Try (Woodward, con Twelvetrees)

    Gloucester 28-21 Exeter

It's a cruel way to lose a match, but what a way to win it.

New Gloucester signing Jason Woodward makes the most of Exeter being a man short in defence and touches down in the corner.

Billy Twelvetrees played a vital role, and also kicks the extras.

  10. Post update

    Gloucester 21-21 Exeter

Gloucester are up to the 22 through Purdy - can they force something?

Jack Nowell makes an important tackle but the Cherry and Whites are still piling on the pressure...

  11. Bonus point in bag for Falcons

    Newcastle 35-8 Warriors

A fourth try of the night late on for Newcastle and they have an opening bonus point win.

Juan Pablo Socino is off the bench to round off a miserable night for Worcester as he latches on to a lovely offload from fellow replacement Nili Latu.

Craig Willis adds the extras off the tee.

  12. Missed penalty (Slade)

    Gloucester 21-21 Exeter

    How important might that be?

Referee Matt Carley penalises home player John Hohneck, and Henry Slade has a tricky kick to edge Exeter again.

However the England man's effort drifts wide.

  13. Post update

    Gloucester 21-21 Exeter

Both sides are trying to win this in the closing stages, which is incredibly good to see.

Chiefs have the territory at the moment though and Henry Slade could well be eyeing up a drop-kick to win this - he's certainly got an eye on it.

What a way it would be to seal it.

  14. Post update

    Gloucester 21-21 Exeter

    Chris Jones

BBC 5 live rugby union reporter at Kingsholm

Exeter have been uncharacteristically sloppy tonight, way off their best.

But they still look the side most likely to win. That's why they are champions.

  15. Try (Woodburn, con Slade)

    Gloucester 21-21 Exeter

    Woodburn try

What technique and athleticism from Exeter's Olly Woodburn.

He awkwardly manages to catch a sub-standard box kick from Gloucester skipper Will Heinz, before spinning and sprinting to get the try in the corner.

The resulting conversion is so tough, but Henry Slade shows his international class to make it from out wide.

  16. Post update

    Gloucester 21-14 Exeter

Wow - Chiefs have just thrown the kitchen sink at the hosts... trying every trick in the book.

But there's yet another error when they get close to the try-line, this time a knock-on.

Exeter were ruthless last season, but it's not really happened for them tonight.

  17. Takulua back on target

    Newcastle 28-8 Warriors

Have no fear - Sonatane Takulua is back on target for Newcastle.

Worcester once again are penalised by Wayne Barnes at the breakdown and a penalty follows for the Falcons.

Takulua makes up for his earlier conversion miss and puts Newcastle 20 points ahead with just over 12 minutes remaining.

  18. Post update

    Gloucester 21-14 Exeter

A nasty collision in midfield sees Gareth Steenson go off for a head injury assessment.

Chiefs then win a kickable penalty and go for the corner instead - would Steenson have pulled rank and taken the three points?

We'll never know, but Exeter have a try-scoring opportunity...

  19. Falcons add a third

    Newcastle 25-8 Warriors

Just 18 minutes remaining at Kingston Park and Newcastle looked to have sealed the win with a third try of the night.

A rumbling, rolling maul barges its way through the Warriors defence and finishes up with hooker Kyle Cooper at the bottom of it.

For the first time tonight, Sonatane Takulua is off-target from the tee, but that was his toughest attempt so far in his defence.
