The modern pentathlon was first contested at the Olympic Games in 1912. Thirty-six athletes will compete in both the male and female events at Tokyo 2020. The 2019 World Cup is important for competitors as the respective male and female winners will gain qualification for next summer’s Olympics.

Kate French took the individual gold at the Prague World Cup event a month ago as Great Britain took two of the podium places in the women’s event.
French used a strong swim and a dominant display in the fencing to hold off Russia’s Gulnaz Gubaydullina and set up her third World Cup win
Third place went to French’s team-mate Jessica Varley, who reached a World Cup podium for the first time with her laser run. “I’ve been working for this basically my whole life,” said Varley afterwards.

The Modern Pentathlon World Cup is an annual series of modern pentathlon competitions. It consists of four stages and a World Cup final, with each stage held in a different country.

Cairo, Egypt – February 27 to March 3
Sofia, Bulgaria – April 12 to 14
Szekesfehervar, Hungary – May 1 to 5
Prague, Czech Republic – May 22 to 27
Tokyo, Japan – June 27 to 30
First you have a swordfight, then you swim for 200m, jump some fences on horseback, go for a run and then finish off by shooting an air pistol. Sound crazy? Welcome to the world of modern pentathlon.
While it may not be the first sport that comes to mind when you're looking for a new challenge, a challenge it certainly is, and broken down into its component parts it is massively accessible.
