The Giants seized control from the drop of the puck and took an early lead at 1:50 when Dustin Johner played a little football with the puck to get it under control before his centring pass, looking for Ryan Martinelli, deflected in off the skate of a Stars defenceman. The home side doubled their advantage with an early contender for goal of the season. At 10:37 Sebastian Sylvestre picked the puck up in his own zone and then using a combination of speed and skill left the Stars defence in his wake before going top shelf on visiting goaltender Callum Anderson. An excellent opening period for the Giants was completed on the power play at 16:04 when Brendan Connolly found Sylvestre all alone in the slot and he had time to turn and shoot low past Anderson.
