Highlights are just about to start on BBC Two.

Don't reach for the hoofer-doofer. You can watch at the top of this very page.

  6. Get Involved

Prof David Owen: Great effort by Rory McIlroy - very sad he didn't make it, but it may help him in the longer run to become better, because this will - and should - hurt.

  7. 'It's going to hurt for a bit'

Rory McIlroy had to hold back tears before he could start his interview on on Sky Sports. He said:

"Part of me is very disappointed not to be here for the weekend. I'm emotional but happy with how I played.

"The support I got out there was incredible and you could see on the back nine, I went with it today and that's what I was planning to do all week.

"Yesterday gave me a mountain to climb but I dug in and showed good resilience.

"It's going to hurt for a bit. I've been looking forward to this week for a long time.

"I didn't play my part but everyone in Northern Ireland came out to watch me and played theirs."

Paolo Brand: Brilliant round Rory McIlroy. So near yet so far. You gave us all hope and thrilling, edge-of-seat golf. Your time will come my friend.

  9. Post update

    Iain Carter

BBC Sport golf correspondent at Royal Portrush

Rory McIlroy shot a second-round 65 and in all probability he has missed the cut. Just think about that.

It just shows us what a class act he is. But the point still remains that yesterday was an absolute golfing disaster.

  10. Post update

    Alex Bysouth

    BBC Sport at Royal Portrush

Rory McIlroy taps in for par and it’s treated like a winning putt. The cheers when he arrived at the first tee on Thursday could be heard right across County Antrim. The ones just now probably carried to Belfast, but it’s Friday and out for the home nation hero.

  11. Post update

    Meghan MacLaren

Ladies European Tour player and BBC Radio 5 Live pundit

Everybody wants a story but the reality of golf and life is that it doesn't work like that sometimes.

  12. Post update

    John Murray

    BBC Radio 5 Live commentator

He had to make a stunning comeback today to make the cut. It could have been absolutely sensational. He has disappointment etched all over him that he won't be here for the third and fourth rounds.

  13. Post update

    Alex Bysouth

    BBC Sport at Royal Portrush

Just not quite enough for Rory McIlroy. He tightens his face and frowns towards his caddie. A knowing glance, one of resignation.

What a remarkable run. And how he’ll rue that opening tee shot yesterday morning. Cruel.

  14. McIlroy's Portrush dream is over

    McIlroy +2 (18)

Rory McIlroy taps in for a brilliant six-under 65.

Sadly it's one shot too short to make the cut.

He promised to make a fight of it on Friday after his 79, and he did.

The cut is at one over. McIlroy finishes on two over.

    It's got the legs...

    ... but it's a few feet left.

    And with that.

    Iain Carter

BBC Sport golf correspondent at Royal Portrush

We said all along this would be a very special Open for all sorts of reasons. This is one of those moments which tells you why. I've never seen such scenes for a player trying to make the cut on a Friday evening.

  18. Post update

    Alex Bysouth

    BBC Sport at Royal Portrush

What a roar for Rory. He takes his hat off to acknowledge the crowd and just soak up this atmosphere as best he can. It may be for the last time at Royal Portrush...
