  1. Goodbye

    Rory McIlroy

What a great Sunday for Rory McIlroy - the new champion of the Players Championship.

He joins a select band of Europeans - Martin Kaymer (2014), Henrik Stenson (2009), Sergio Garcia (2008) and Sandy Lyle (1987) to win at Sawgrass.

And it was a hell of a ride wasn't it...with changes to the leaderboard going into overdrive at times.

If you've not had your golf fix yet though here's a bit more to keep you going:

Thanks for joining us, hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

  2. How things finished

So just a quick recap on how the top of the leaderboard looked at the conclusion to the Players Championship.

    -16 Rory McIlroy (NI)

    -15 Jim Furyk (US)

-14 Jhonattan Vegas (Ven) Eddie Pepperell (Eng)

-13 Brandt Snedeker (US), Dustin Johnson (US), Tommy Fleetwood (Eng)

  3. 'I desperately wanted to win'

    Rory McIlroy

More from Rory McIlroy speaking to NBC:

"I've started the second phase of my career. I've learned a lot in 10-11 years and feel I can make the next 10-11 years even better.

"I work hard and do all the right things. Winning this is awesome but it's a by-product of all the stuff you don't see that I do at home.

"This was one of the tournaments that I desperately wanted to win and get on my CV.

"It's got the deepest field. There's some unbelievable names on the trophy and I'm proud for my name to be among them."

  4. Post update

Rory McIlroy got the job done today but his first two rounds laid the platform.

The four-time major winner shot a 67 and a 65 before carding a 70 on Saturday and Sunday.

  5. 'My driver didn't behave on Saturday'

    Rory McIlroy

Players Championship winner Rory McIlroy speaking to NBC:

"I came back and played some really good golf down the stretch today. All my experiences over the last few weeks helped me out.

"My driver was the club that didn't behave itself yesterday so I went over to the range and gave it a couple of slaps last night.

"On 18 I knew I just needed one good swing to close it out. And to be able to do that on one of the toughest holes in golf stands me in good stead for later this year."

  6. Post update

Here comes the presentation ceremony with the 2018 champion Webb Simpson passing over the new sterling silver and 24k gold vermeil winners trophy, custom-designed by Tiffany & Co.

The face of the trophy is merged from the faces of the 38 different winners of the Players including Jack Nicklaus, who won it first in 1974 and again in 1976 and 1978, two-time winner Tiger Woods (2001 & 2013) and the 2018 champion Webb Simpson.

  7. 'I feel like I'm playing the best golf of my life'

    R McIlroy -16 (F)

More from the Players Championship winner Rory McIlroy speaking to Sky Sports:

"The final few holes were tough on 13,14 and 15 and to make birdie at 15 after I had dropped a shot on 14 was massive.

"To par the last two holes and hit three good shots when I needed to gives me so much confidence going forward

"If I hadn't won today, I'd have said I didn't need one going into Augusta but it's nice to win on a course that will play similar to Augusta in a few weeks.

"I feel like I'm playing some of the best golf of my life right now and i just need to keep doing the same things."

  8. Emulating Sandy

    Sandy Lyle

Rory McIlroy's victory means he emulates a certain Scottish great at Sawgrass.

Sandy Lyle was the only British player to win the Players Championship and that was back in 1987. Lyle went on to win the Masters at Augusta a year later (1988).

Nice touch on the microphone by the way.

  9. 'It's very special'

    R McIlroy -16 (F)

The Players Championship winner Rory McIlroy speaking to Sky Sports:

"It's very special. I just tried to treat it like another day even though I've had other close calls this year. They were good for me in that those experiences led me to this point and got me over the line today.

"I birdied nine. Had a great chance on 10, birdied 11 and before I hit my tee shot on 12 I heard a big roar.

"Someone told me that Eddie [Pepperell] had made a birdie further up the course. I thought 'that's good for Eddie' but then when I looked up he was on 14 under par and I was like, 'where's he come from?'"

  10. 'My confidence has been rising'

    J Furyk -15 (F)

Jim Furyk, who finished one behind McIlroy in second, speaking to Sky Sports:

"I knew I had to make birdie on the last and it was nice to get up there and know I didn't have a lot to do.

"I've been playing well so my confidence level has been rising. There's also a little disappointment in that maybe I played well enough to win this tournament but obviously Rory [McIlroy] thought otherwise, playing superbly to win."

  11. Watch: The moment McIlroy won the Players

It's been a long time coming but Rory McIlroy is finally back in the winners' circle... here's the moment he sealed his first victory at the Players Championship - the 'fifth' major.

He just needs that Green Jacket now...

  12. Post update

That's Rory McIlroy's first win on the PGA Tour since 18 March 2018 when he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.

It also sets him up nicely for the Masters which starts on the 11 April at the Augusta National Golf Club.

  13. McIlroy wins the Players Championship

    R McIlroy -16 (F)

Rory McIlroy stoops down, marks his ball and then steps up to knock in the winning putt.

Four birdies on the back nine mean the Northern Irishman wins the Players Championship on St Patrick's Day.

  14. Post update

    R McIlroy -16 (17)

That should be that. Rory McIlroy rolls his ball down to about a foot.

  15. Post update

    R McIlroy -16 (17)

Outstanding. The whoops of delight have probably just told Rory McIlroy what we can see. He's about 12 feet from the hole.

A two-putt from there will suffice for the Championship.

  16. Post update

    R McIlroy -16 (17)

Now here comes Rory McIlroy with his second on the 18th, after an impeccable tee shot....

  17. Water for Fleetwood and Rahm

    T Fleetwood -14 J Rahm -13 (16)

Oh Tommy. After a wonderful birdie at 16 Fleetwood gets his nine-iron shot all wrong at 17.

His balls skips off the wooden sleepers that surround the green, straight into the water. He had to attack the pin but that looks as though it's cost him any remaining chance.

Jon Rahm's hopes also look to be over as he lands in the drink.

  18. Post update

    R McIlroy -16 (17)

Talk about a testy little putt. Too much on this might see Rory end up in the drink.

He judges the pace just right though, trickling it down close to the cup. His putt for par is a gimme.

    Just one hole to go.
