  1. Farewell

And that's where we leave you for another major championship year. Three of the four winners in 2017 were American and Sergio Garcia claimed his first major with that popular win at Augusta in April.

The 24-year-old Justin Thomas from Kentucky, whose father and grandfather were both PGA Tour players, is the eighth first time winner in the last nine majors and the champagne corks are popping to celebrate a very worthy champion at Quail Hollow. Cheerio now.

You look at American golf now with this collection of young players, the kindling is there and it's a real tinderbox that is going to ignite.

  4. Can Fowler follow?

    Jay Townsend

Golf expert on BBC Radio 5 live

This will put a tremendous amount of pressure on Rickie Fowler. JT has a major, Jordan has several, Brooks Koepka too, he'll be thinking 'what do I need to do?'

A 67 in the final round is great but not if you have made 73 in the round before, he needs to find a way of putting four rounds together and not make those mistakes.

  5. Shots of the day

Chip-ins, long putts, majestic iron shots and flicks off balance over streams, they are all in the shots of the day montage.

  6. Highlights of the day

What a moment it was at the par three 17th. Thomas hit a bold tee shot and the putt wriggled in to take him to nine under and with a crucial cushion to take to the last.

  7. Ryder Cup 'tide has turned'

    Jay Townsend

Golf expert on BBC Radio 5 live

The strength of Justin Thomas is everything. He hits it a mile. He can hit it high. He is a more talented hitter of the ball than Justin Spieth, although I don't think there's a more talented all-round golfer at making scores than Spieth at the moment.

If you think about Spieth, Thomas, Reed, Koepka, Dustin Johnson - these are young guys that are going to carry the US Ryder Cup for probably the next five matches. I think the tide has probably turned.

BBC Radio 5 live presenter Will Perry at Quail Hollow: "Kevin Kisner was being interviewed earlier. He led on Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday night. He looked absolutely downtrodden."

  9. 'I can't put this into words'

    Thomas wins PGA Championship

More quotes from an emotional Justin Thomas after claiming his first major...

On the feelings of winning his first major: "I can't put it into words right now. I'm glad to have a trophy now."

On seeing out the tough Green Mile - the name given to the 16th, 17th and 18th holes at at Quail Hollow - to clinch victory: "I've been playing the final three holes pretty well all week. The adrenaline today has been unbelievable - the ball has been going so far.

"On the 16th, I've been driving well so I just tried to get it up there over the bunker and make par, then on the 17th the pin today was brutal so to make birdie was beyond a bonus."

On his putt eventually dropping in on the 10th: "It was funny because it snuck up on the hole. We read it going left and then a bit right and it never came back right.

"Once it got there I felt it would go in but it didn't so I acted like a child and had a tantrum. Suddenly it went in and I didn't look so dumb!"

  10. Post update

These two cheeky chappies and best pals are the winners of the last two majors of the year.

  11. Key moment

Justin's mum has the waterworks going, but they are happy tears. Let's have another look at that remarkable putt on the 10th today, which was reminiscent of Tiger's moment at the 16th at Augusta in 2005, when he went on to win as well.

  12. 'Patience was the key'

    Thomas wins PGA Championship

Justin Thomas has taken to the microphone on the 18th green. First he is asked what he thinks was the key to his impressive final round.

"Just patience. I felt at the US Open like, although Brooks Koepka had an unbelievable round and I didn't have my best stuff that day, I still learned I needed to be patient to have a better finish. I felt like I had the game to get it done, it was a matter if I got it done or not."

This was an outstanding performance, taking the initiative, seizing the moment. The birdie at the 17th meant he could drop a shot at the last.

Simon Hancock: Nice touch by JT to sign golf balls and hand to the scorers when there must have been so much else going on in his head.

Justin Thomas is so talented - this is around the time we expected him to start winning. This will allow him to go forward from here.

  17. Watch Thomas' winning putt

    Thomas wins PGA Championship

It wasn't the most spectacular way to win a major but Justin Thomas doesn't care.

He will remember this tiddler every day of his life. It is the putt which clinched his first major...

  18. Post update

In the top 12 there were seven nationalities but three of this year's majors have been won by Americans.
