  2. Hamilton on Portuguese GP pole - read the report

    Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton snatched pole position for the Portuguese Grand Prix from team-mate Valtteri Bottas in a thrilling end to an unusual qualifying.

Hamilton and Bottas ran theoretically slower medium tyres to set their times and a key strategy call by the Briton could have made the difference.

Hamilton chose to do two hot laps at the climax to Bottas' one, and the lead swapped between them as it played out.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen took third, from Charles Leclerc's Ferrari.

Hamilton ended up beating Bottas by 0.101 seconds at the end of an unpredictable and exciting session. It was the 97th pole position of the world champion's career.

    Hamilton takes 97th career pole

Douglas Mcfarlane: Actually looking forward to a race Sunday for a change , if this track doesn't deliver an a exciting race tomorrow F1 is doomed...I sticking my neck out and saying a thriller.

James Ayres: Looks like Lewis is going to add Portimao to the list of circuits he has won at - the longest list in F1?

Philip Murphy: Lewis Hamilton might get to 100 pole positions this year for sure.

Dan Bell: Lewis Hamilton showing yet again that he’s the greatest.

  6. Post update

So we could be set for a great start tomorrow as the front row of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas will be on the medium tyres, while Max Verstappen is third, looking to jump ahead of them early on, on the softs.

  7. 'Feel our way into the race'

Max Verstappen, who will start third on the grid: "The tarmac is quite difficult to bring the tyres in, so it's a bit hit and miss. I'm happy though.

"I think the lap in Q3 was pretty decent, it's very difficult to get the front tyres and the rear tyres to match but again, P3 is not too far behind and of course a lot to play for tomorrow and hopefully we can stay close.

"Turn One is not really a place to dive. I think the start will be important but even then, we don't really have enough information about how the tyres are going to hold up, so we'll just feel our way into the race and see what's going to happen."

  8. 'Ultimately I should've gone for two timed laps'

Valtteri Bottas, who will start the race second, says: "Obviously at the end we decided to go for the mediums. The mediums felt a tiny bit quicker than the softs.

"It was my decision to go for one timed lap [at the end] but it seems like doing two laps for Lewis was better. Mine was a decent lap, not perfect and it has been tricky to get really clear laps. The lap was good but ultimately I should've gone for two timed laps.

"It would've been nice to be on the clean side of the track but I will do what I can from P2."

  9. 'Last lap got better and better'

Lewis Hamilton, who secured his 97th pole position, said: "It's amazing. I can't tell you how hard that was today.

"I guess we have a great car but you have to drive the nuts off it to pull out a lap. Valtteri has been so quick this weekend, he's topped every session, so I've just been digging and digging trying to find that extra time.

"At the end I chose to do three laps to give me a chance to have a stab and beat his time and I think [Bottas] decided to do one, so I was like 'OK, this could provide me with an opportunity' and it worked. That last lap got better and better as I went through.

"The team communicate really well and gave both of us the option to either go on to the soft or the medium, we both chose to go medium, he chose one lap, I chose to do three. I got out there nice and early.

"The tyres are really hard here this weekend - the hardest of the compound - and getting them to work here is very difficult. That's why I wanted an extra run, just in case it didn't work out.

"The track is hardcore. There are places you can't see where you are going. It really is one of the hardest circuits I've been too. The surface is strange. This is a very smooth surface and doesn't work the tyres the same as say, a Barcelona."
